Today’s utopianote: I’ve been out in the meadow this month making videos about the Shakers, and their founder Ann Lee — a visionary textile worker of the English working poor who went on to found one of the longest-lasting communal experiments in American history. In 1780, the earliest Shakers of upstate New York experienced a membership spike when what we now know was smoke from Quebec wildfires darkened the sky and people thought the world was ending. Today, the air is hazy with the same fumes. What does it mean to build a community premised on egalitarianism, pacifism, no private property and a practice of collective ecstatic devotion to the divine, in response to the end-times? These are the questions I find myself asking, and attempting to answer, on camera with varying degrees of coherence. Follow along! But first, your listings.

Ma-Yi Writer’s Lab Fall 2026 Playground Series
They anticipate accepting four or five new members to the Writer’s Lab who will participate in generative sessions constituted of playwrights, directors, and actors. Playwrights can use each session to explore eight to 10 pages of writing on its feet, to get a sense of the embodied shape of the writing.

AXS Film Fund
This initiative supports documentary filmmakers and nonfiction new media creators from diverse backgrounds who navigate the challenges of living with a disability. Prize for outstanding historical fiction, non-fiction, and biographies for readers ages 11-15. The Prize seeks to promote engagement with American history among young readers. The Incubator Program will support an artist of any level in the creation and presentation of a new work while creating new and exciting opportunities for audience engagement. The artist will receive a $1,000 development fee for the first year of development.
